The Institute of Medical Science recently welcomed Valeria Vela Mendoza as our new Graduate Program & Awards Coordinator, PhD. In this role Valeria provides administrative support to our PhD students throughout the continuum of their degree. She also manages the external awards portfolio.
Valeria brings with her a wealth of experience. Before joining IMS she worked at the University of Toronto's Department of Anthropology as their Undergraduate & Graduate Assistant. She was also a Communications Assistant with Anthropology and with U of T's Department of Spanish & Portuguese. She completed her undergraduate degree at U of T, double majoring in International Relations and Criminology & Socio-Legal Studies, with a minor in Latin American Studies. She will be starting an MA in the Department of Political Science at U of T this fall as well.
We asked Valeria a few fun get-to-know you questions:
What is your favourite holiday destination?
For the food, culture, landscapes and people — my favourite destinations at the moment are Mexico (my homeland) and Brazil!
What are your favourite pastimes?
I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, planning future travels, visiting trails and parks, reading historical nonfiction and magic realism, and keeping up with Formula One (F1).
Please join us in welcoming Valeria to the IMS! She is in the office on Wednesdays and Thursdays, so feel free to stop by, introduce yourself and say hello in person.
