Supervision & Funding
International applications must have written confirmation from:
- An IMS graduate supervisor guaranteeing their willingness to supervise and fund you
- A guaranteed source of funding from:
- A recognized international funding agency
- A government scholarship from their home country
- The prospective supervisor
All the above requisites must be obtained before the application can be considered.
The minimum annual stipend for new and continuing international students in the MSc program is $20,545.09 living allowance + tuition fees (and including UHIP premium).
The minimum annual stipend for new and continuing international students in the PhD program is $22,828.37 living allowance + tuition fees (and including UHIP premium).
You may be eligible for an entrance award in your first year – some conditions apply.

Graduate Coordinators’ Entrance Award
The Institute of Medical Science Graduate Coordinators’ Entrance Award is designed to attract top international students to our doctoral stream (MSc and PhD) programs. To be considered, you must submit your completed graduate studies application (see Applying) for September registration to the Institute of Medical Science by February 1st. If successful, you will receive this award only once. Students funded by their home government or in receipt of an international scholarship are not eligible.
Terms and Conditions of Eligibility
To be eligible for this award, you must meet all the following criteria:
- Demonstrate exceptional academic achievement
- Fully describe your proposed research project/plan
- Provide a letter from an IMS faculty member indicating their willingness to fund and supervise your research thesis program
Value and Duration
The value of the award is $10,000 CAD. The award is given to an international student upon first entry to IMS. The award is non-renewable and will be considered as part of the annual student stipend.
Adjudication and Results
Applications will be reviewed by the Graduate Coordinators. Awardees and supervisors will be notified in writing no later than April 15th.
