Research Synopsis:

Dr. Rachel Mitchell is a staff psychiatrist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, an Associate Scientist at the Sunnybrook Research Institute, and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto. Her research focuses on sex and gender differences in self-harm, suicide, and mood disorders in adolescence. Using a multidisciplinary approach that includes epidemiology and psychosocial treatment, she aims to clearly and comprehensively characterize sex- and gender-specific similarities and differences among adolescents with mood disorders and suicide-related behaviors.

Recently, Dr. Mitchell’s research has expanded to examine the impact of social media on adolescent mental health. The overarching goal of her work is to inform the development of effective, personalized interventions at the earliest stages of illness, ultimately reducing the long-term burden of mood disorders into adulthood.
