Part-time Master's for Clinician's Program & Application Requirements
The Institute of Medical Science offers a part-time thesis-based, research focused Master of Science for clinicians.
This program stream is intended for professionals practicing full-time in an Ontario Regulated Health Profession who wish to pursue graduate research training while continuing their clinical work.
Prior to submitting application documents, you must meet the following requirements:
- Be a Canadian citizen or have Canadian permanent resident status at the time of the application
- Be employed full-time in your relevant healthcare discipline
- Hold certification/licensure in an Ontario Regulated Health Profession (https://www.ontario.ca/page/regulated-health-professions)
- Not be currently enrolled in a program of study at a recognized university or post-secondary institution
- Identify an IMS faculty member (with associate or full member faculty status) who will supervise you over the 4-year duration of your studies and provide project-related funding as needed (statistics support, publication fees, etc.)

For September 2026 applications, please select the full-time MSc option in the drop-down menu on the SGS online application portal. The IMS Office will adjust your application to the part-time option manually.
Applicants to the part-time MSc must submit the following:
Curriculum Vitae (CV)
Maximum 5 pages
Your CV must include:
- Post-secondary Education
- Research Experiences
- Academic Productivity (manuscripts and publications, conference presentations and abstracts, etc.)
- Employment
- Volunteer Work, Internships, and Extracurricular Activities
Academic Transcripts
- 4-year undergraduate degree and/or 2-years Master’s program from a recognized university
- At least an A- (80%, 3.7 GPA, First Class Distinction) average in the last 2 full years of your undergraduate degree, or a mid-B average in Master’s studies
- If you have completed your degree more than 5 year ago, and your transcripts do not satisfy the criteria above, you must provide evidence of scholarly ability and personal maturity
- If you are/were a University of Toronto student, you do not need to provide an official transcript for the application. Please upload a copy of your academic record from ROSI/ACORN as the electronic transcript to your online application
- The IMS does not require official transcripts for an application to be considered, unofficial transcripts are fine. However, if successful, the IMS requires official transcripts to come directly from the issuing institution for registration in the program
Letter of Intent
- Maximum 2 pages
- Description of your past academic and research activities
- Any gaps in study or lower grades
- Current work and academic position
- Reason to pursue the proposed research
- Future academic and career plans
Research Project Plan Overview
- Maximum 2 pages
- Outlining your proposed research focus or question
- How the proposed research project is distinct from your current role or work, if required
- A 4-year project completion plan with at least annual milestones
- Co-signed by you and your proposed IMS supervisor
Reference Letters
- Must submit two (2) reference letters
- Both reference letters must be from current or previous supervisors
- At least one of your supervisors must be able to describe any observed research abilities and motivation from you during the time of direct supervision
- If one of your references is also your proposed supervisor, a single letter addressing past/current and proposed supervision is acceptable (see Letter of Supervision drop-down menu below)
Letter of Supervision
- From your proposed IMS faculty member supervisor
- Indicating ability to supervise and fund your research (excluding salary) for the length of the part-time MSc program (4 years)
- If your proposed supervisor is also one of your references, a single letter addressing your past, current, and proposed supervision is acceptable (see Reference Letters drop-down menu above)
Letter Confirming Full-time Employment
A letter from Human Resources, or equivalent indicating that you are employed full-time (standard full-time employment is 35-40 hours per week).
Terms of Engagement Form
- Confirms your ability to meet all program requirements
- includes mandatory courses and activities taking place during regular working hours for the length of the program (4 years)
- Co-signed by you and your proposed IMS supervisor
