The MSc Futures Project provides a snapshot of continuing education and employment outcomes for Master of Science (MSc) students who graduated from the Institute of Medical Science between 2009 and 2022. The study uses publicly available data from open access internet sources such as LinkedIn and company websites to determine education or employment status. We were able to successfully locate 73% of the 839 total graduates.

Findings indicate a third (33%) of MSc students decided to pursue a PhD, either via direct transfer at the IMS or following graduation from the MSc program. Nearly a quarter of graduates (22.5%) enrolled in a professional program, with more than half (58%) going to medical school.

Those alumni who continued directly with employment primary work in the public sector (61%) or in post-secondary education (19%). A smaller proportion (13%) work in the private sector, mainly employed by biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies.

Those individuals who entered the graduate program with a medical degree mainly work as clinicians or clinician-scientists in hospitals and/or hospital-based research institutes.

Based on this data, it's clear that an MSc degree from the University of Toronto's Institute of Medical Science provides students with a valuable gateway to further their education and embark on successful careers within academia, healthcare and beyond.
