Success in Graduate School and Beyond

University of Toronto Press recently released the second edition of the book Success in Graduate School and Beyondwritten by Profs. Nana Lee, Director of Graduate Professional Development and Mentorship in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, and Reinhart Reithmeier, former Director for Graduate Professional Development and Alumni Engagement at the Institute of Medical Science (IMS). The book, written in an engaging and conversational style, is designed to empower graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in STEM with practical tools, tips, and skill development strategies to plan and create their dream career pathway.

The first edition of the book - titled Success After Graduate School (2016) - was based on a popular graduate professional development (GPD) course for PhD students developed by the authors, launched in the Department of Biochemistry, and subsequently offered by IMS as well. The book's new edition is rooted in the recognition that professional development should start in graduate school, well before graduation, and is intended to both supplement GPD courses and act as a stand-alone guide to workplace readiness. It was written for a more Canadian-wide audience, with greater content and perspective on wellness, work-life integration, and equity, diversity and inclusion. Success in Graduate School and Beyond is organized into five sections that support graduate student development: self-reflection, wellness, skills, networking, and planning for future success.

Book Launch
We embarked on this 6-year journey to write the book to empower STEM students, most of whom don't become professors, with the tools to achieve success in graduate school and beyond.

Covering increasingly important career subjects such as mentorship, transferrable skill development, and emotional intelligence, this updated guidebook solves a skills gap and builds core competencies demanded from industry and academia. Interspersed personal accounts from Drs. Lee and Reithmeier about key topics, together with diverse alumni career profiles describing various career trajectories, work to encourage self-awareness, promote essential skill development and networking proficiency. The book serves as an important resource for graduate students to set themselves up for career satisfaction and success.
