Research Synopsis

Dr. Hodaie's research specializes in the use of structural brain imaging tools and advanced methods of imaging brain white and gray matter. Her group applies these tools to study functional neurosurgery disorders, including chronic neuropathic pain. These techniques have been used for the imaging of the trigeminal nerves and pathways in trigeminal neuralgia, a most severe facial neuropathic pain condition. Dr. Hodaie is an international expert in the diagnosis and treatment of trigeminal neuralgia and has performed over a thousand surgical procedures for the disorder. Her innovative research has significantly changed our understanding of trigeminal neuralgia pain, and have helped shift the focus from the traditional view of studying the blood vessels compressing the trigeminal nerves, to one that studies nerves and brain abnormalities and how these relate to pain.
