Research Synopsis
The Leong-Poi lab focuses on basic biomedical research in cardiovascular medicine, specifically the investigation of underlying pathophysiologic aspects of cardiac diseases and the development of ultrasound-targeted gene-based therapies to treat cardiovascular diseases. His clinical research interests revolve around cardiac imaging, predominantly echocardiography, in ischemic heart disease, heart failure and valvular heart disease.
Dr. Howard Leong-Poi is a Clinician Scientist in the Keenan Research Centre for Biomedical Science and Medical Director for the Heart, Lung & Vascular Program at St. Michael’s Hospital, Unity Health Toronto. He is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto. His research has been funded by the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR), Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada (HSFC) and the Canadian Foundation for Innovation. He has previously held personnel support from the CIHR (New Investigator), HSFC (Clinician Scientist – Phase II Award) and the Ministry of Research and Innovation (Early Researcher Award). He has published >150 articles in peer-reviewed journals, and serves on the editorial board of the Canadian Journal of Cardiology. Dr. Leong-Poi has served on numerous grant review panels, including the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Cardiovascular B (CSB), and Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada (Committees I, II and VIII).
