Research Synopsis

Currently, in his laboratory, Dr. Hutchison and his research teams and collaborators are discovering and validating blood biomarkers for diagnosis, prognosis and response to neuroprotective therapies for concussion, traumatic brain injury (TBI) and cardiac arrest. As a member of the International Initiative for TBI Research, he is working closely with scientists from Europe, the US and Canada to meet international guidelines, to bring blood biomarkers of brain injury to the bedside. He currently leads the ‘Canadian biobank and database for TBI (CanTBI)’ and ‘inhaled Nitric Oxide for Cardiac Arrest in Pediatrics and Adults (iNOCAPA): A pilot randomized controlled trial and translational biology study’(co-principal investigator, Dr. John Granton). These studies are funded by Brain Canada and partners, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada and Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals. He is also the chair of the international Data Safety and Monitoring Committee of the BONANZA randomized controlled trial in adults with TBI, led from Australia.
