Research Synopsis

Dr. Lê studies biological processes involved in the initiation and maintenance of alcohol dependences using preclinical models. He is investigating the neurochemical mechanisms underlying the effects of stress on relapses to alcohol. Dr. Lê is examining the interaction between corticotropin releasing factor (CRF) and serotonin, as well as the interaction between CRF and the noradrenergic system in stress-induced relapse to alcohol and other drugs. Dr. Lê is also investigating the biological bases for the co-abuse of alcohol and nicotine, particularly how nicotine might strengthen alcohol dependence, since approximately 80 per cent of people with alcohol use disorders are smokers.
