Andrew Howard
Research Synopsis
Dr. Howard is an orthopaedic clinician-scientist, whose research focuses on prevention of road traffic injuries to children, which are overwhelmingly the leading cause of death for children in developed countries. Dr. Howard studies the biomechanics and epidemiology of child motor vehicle occupant, pedestrian and cyclist injuries. This work is done in through funded Canada-wide networks with CIHR and/or Industry Canada’s continuous funding for the past 18 years.
Dr. Howard also studies the epidemiology of other childhood injury including falls and sports injuries. He has worked with the Toronto District School board to study the relationship between playground equipment and injury risk. Dr. Howard also researches the prevention and treatment of unintentional injury to children in low income countries, is the Director of the Office of International Surgery at the University of Toronto, and an active member of the Canadian Network for International Surgery.
