Research Synopsis

I am an endocrine and acute care surgeon at the University Health Network (Toronto, Canada) and assistant professor of surgery the University of Toronto. I specialize in the surgical management of thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal diseases. I am also the director of the Surgical Artificial Intelligence Research Academy, where I lead a multidisciplinary team of clinicians, data scientists, engineers and game developers.  My research focus is in surgical expertise and the optimization of performance in the operating room. This includes using qualitative methodologies to better understand expert mental models, intraoperative decision-making and other constructs, as well as the development of technologies and innovations to augment and improve surgical performance. These include platforms that incorporate artificial intelligence, computer vision and advanced simulation.
