Research Synopsis

Dr. Tom A. Schweizer is a Full Professor in the Faculty of Medicine, Division of Neurosurgery, University of Toronto, and a Senior Scientist at the Keenan Research Centre at Unity Health Toronto. His research focuses on concussion and mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), with an emphasis on identifying neuroimaging biomarkers that inform recovery trajectories and have relevance for clinical assessment and patient management.

Dr. Schweizer’s research program integrates multimodal MRI, including structural, diffusion, susceptibility-weighted, and functional MRI, with experimental cognitive paradigms and neuropsychological assessment to advance the diagnosis and prognosis of concussion and acquired brain injury across the continuum from acute injury through long-term recovery, including aging and neurodegenerative processes.

He leads large, multi-site concussion research initiatives and contributes to national and international collaborations aimed at advancing imaging-based biomarkers of brain injury and improving their clinical translation.

Dr. Schweizer serves as Scientific Director of the Brain Health and Wellness Research Pillar at St. Michael’s Hospital and is Co-Director of the Institute for Biomedical Science and Technology (iBEST). His research is supported by peer-reviewed funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, the Alzheimer Society of Canada, and the Alzheimer’s Association (USA). He is a recipient of the Institute of Medical Science (IMS), University of Toronto, Mentorship Award and the Keenan Legacy Award, Unity Health Toronto.
