The IMS is pleased to announce graduate students Mia Feldman and Andrew Youssef as the recipients of this year's Jay Keystone Memorial Award for Innovation in Scientific Communication for their project Co/LAB: The Human Stories Behind Science.
The Jay Keystone Memorial Award recognizes innovative initiatives that advance scientific communication by fostering accessibility, creativity, and meaningful engagement beyond traditional academic audiences. Co/Lab stood out for its strong alignment with the award’s mission and its thoughtful integration of lived experience into scientific storytelling.
Co/LAB is a digital and print anthology that will be combined with a public launch event. The initiative will pair graduate students and persons with lived experience to co‑create reflective, narrative, artistic, or multimedia pieces that explore the human dimensions behind data-driven research, highlighting how personal narratives and scientific inquiry can inform and enrich one another.
Feldman brings extensive experience in scientific communication, leadership, and community engagement to the initiative. She currently serves as a journalist and copyeditor for IMS Magazine and is actively involved in community‑based organizations and hospital support roles. Youssef contributes complementary expertise in science‑arts collaboration, leadership in charitable initiatives, and experience working in care settings.
By amplifying diverse voices and encouraging alternative forms of scientific communication, Co/LAB exemplifies the spirit of innovation and inclusion celebrated by the Jay Keystone Memorial Award.
The IMS congratulates Feldman and Youssef and looks forward to the impact this project will have on our community and beyond.
