The role of the Examination Chair is to run examination proceedings, “keep the peace”, represent the IMS and SGS administration and conduct the examination according to the rules of procedure. Chairing is a requirement of your graduate appointment, and is added to your participation inventory for departmental review for renewals and promotions. It is expected that faculty will chair at least one exam annually.
Examination Chairs are required for all MSc and PhD defenses, as well as PhD Direct Entry Qualifying Examinations and MSc-PhD Transfer Examinations.
For PhD Final Oral Examinations, faculty must be full SGS members. However, they do not need to hold their full faculty appointment with the IMS.
IMS faculty are notified by e-mail of upcoming chairing opportunities.

We thank all IMS faculty in advance for their academic service. For more information on chairing exams please contact Danny Fee.
